Europol, Europe’s law enforcement, have reported that they have uncovered a crime syndicate based in Asia, who have fixed over 380 matches across Europe. One of them was a Champions League tie in England, some European Championship qualifying games, and top flight games across Europe, but they did not state the identities of the matches. Speaking in The Hague today Europol stated that 425 officials, players, and criminals are under suspicion. Europol, which has been investigating for 18 months, said that the criminals bet €16m on the fixed matches, and have earned €8m in profits from those matches. They said that their focus was not on the United Kingdom, but it would be “naive”to think that match fixing does not happen there.
